SICSA Whole-Body Interaction Workshop

5 & 6th Nov. 2009, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

New: Registration form

This SICSA workshop will bring together Scottish academics and researchers interested in the role of the body in interaction. The workshop aim is to explore research questions and to brainstorm applications and project ideas relating to whole-body interaction.

Whole-body interaction (sometimes also referred to as full-body interaction) is a new trend in Human-Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous Computing. New technologies like the Wii, wireless motion tracking, and image processing software have greatly increased our capabilities for taking body movement as input. On a more conceptual level, the notion of embodiment has become a strong motivation for research. This rediscovery of the body has happened across several disciplines, e.g. within philosophy, cognitive science, anthropology, and in product design, which investigate the aesthetics of movement in bodily interaction with products.

The workshop will feature a mix of invited talks, interactive exercises and brainstorming of future project ideas. Invited talks will provide inspiration from diverse perspectives on the themes of embodiment and whole-body interaction to help us think of new ideas for potential application areas. Interactive exercises make this workshop a true "work-shop", that we believe will result in many ideas for future projects.
