Scottish Ballet Project

Programme running on Android PhoneScottish Ballet was keen to test audience reaction to a digital souvenir programme and took the opportunity as part of a larger Autumn Season 2012 green campaign (reducing print material by 80%) to launch the first of its kind.

Mark Dunlop and Ian Hamilton of the University of Strathclyde’s Department of Computing & Information Systems worked with Scottish Ballet to develop a bespoke digital programme that could be managed in-house with content changes once built.

The resulting reaction and research findings highlighted an appetite for digital technologies and encouraged by the positive results, Scottish Ballet went on to launch a newsstand app for iPad which is updateable for each production, issues automatic issue reminders, includes film, photos, exclusive backstage insight and importantly encourages social media sharing and ticket sales.

Kirsten Cockburn of Scottish Ballet comments ‘The research was invaluable in our adoption of our chosen technology. Creating the digital programme was highly effective and instantly measurable – allowing us to monitor volumes of downloads and giving us the confidence to develop the Scottish Ballet app which has in turn highlighted further commercial opportunities for the future’.
